"I 'woke up' about a year ago and realized, at 79, my mother wasn't going to be around forever. So now, every Monday when I get off work, I drive to her house and we spend the evening together before I drive the 40 minutes home. We have dinner together, watch TV, knit, I take out her garbage or help her find a misplaced item or whatever she needs. I listen to her tell me the same things she told me last week and the week before or 15 minutes ago, over and over. But, I realize how precious our time together is and I enjoy that she is 'chatty' so I try to never discourage her talking by letting on that she is repeating herself (as a couple of my sisters tend to tell her). I hope someone will be as patient and caring with me when I'm her age." --Karatemom

RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS
~~~~~ April-May-June-2008
In the past three months Garrett Marquis has done 200++ acts of kindness.
Garrett has displayed kindness towards others by helping his dad do yard work, keeping his room clean and helping his mother do housework with out being asked.
Garrett also has been very tolerant with other children using his toys, books and games while visiting our home without them asking Garrett if it was OK first. Garrett was quick to forgive them and forget.
These Children visiting our home were also mean -- Even Striking Garrett some times but still he managed to forgive them and not strike back.
At the market Garrett asked the bag boy if he needed a break... Garrett then took it upon himself to bag our groceries.
We have gone out several times in the past 3 months and Garrett has always held the door open for others while entering or exiting a store or restaurant. It comes natural to Garrett to always say please, thank you and you are welcome. His Manners have always been awesome. Garrett is just a very loving caring child.
We are very proud of Garrett for sharing his personal possessions with others and for being such a well mannered child with people he meets during his day.
Thanks Goshin Karate & Judo Academy, Ms. Bev, and Mr. Boggs for everything you do.
Phillip and Nancy Marquis
This week I was reminded that everything we do matters in life. I did 3 small things this week that I found out made a big difference to someone else.
I waved to a new neighbor who was intensely watching her little boy in the yard. She broke into a smile and a few days later told me that I had changed the rest of her day for the better with my small gesture.
When I was in the drugstore, the woman stocking cold medicine dropped one. I picked it up and handed it to her, thinking nothing of it. She thanked me and told me her back was hurting and she appreciated what I did.
I found that a few kind words can touch someone more deeply than you ever could have known. “Thank you” does matter and can make someone feel appreciated. A sincere “I’m sorry” does make a difference and can lighten a difficult situation. And a few thoughts from the heart grow larger when they reach someone else’s heart.
I barely thought much about it when I did any of these things. But I was reminded yet again that everything we do matters. Never underestimate the impact you may have on someone!
Random Acts of Kindness
You helped this shopper more than you realize
Every Monday morning I shop at the Fry's at Tatum and Bell Road. I am handicapped and use a riding cart to shop. It is very difficult to unload the bags from the cart into the trunk of my car as I am seated and don't have the proper leverage to lift the bags.
Ninety-nine times out of 100, some kind person (man, woman, youngster, oldster) offers assistance in putting my bags into the trunk of my car. They have no idea how much of a help this is.
Thank you to all those who have done this for me
Stranded with Baby?
On October 12th, I was running out the door with my 3 month old baby and feeliung very frazzled, as a new mother often does. I knew my Jeep was on "E" and needed gas, but I really thought I could make it to the gas station. - Unfortunately, I ran out!
I steepped out of the car to wave the pickup behind me around and he gotout of his truck and offered to help. I told him my predicament and he told me to wait there. Two inutes later he returned with a gas can and filled my jeep up with enough to get me to the gas station. I was on my way in five minutes of stopping.
This man would not give me his name. He told me that his kids went to Goshin Karate & Judo Acadmey and that it was his "Act of Kindness".
He did not have to help. but he did, and he did it with a smile. I felt blessed for his kindness on such a streessful day.
Thanks Goshin for the values you teach.
Random Acts of Kindness:
A $100 bill from a stranger at Christmas
she said: "The Lord has led me to you today and He wanted me to give you this."A true Christmas gift: a $100 bill. From a stranger. (I put it to good use.)
I do believe true Christmas spirit still lives today, even in a time where there seems to be no hope for so many people.
On Friday, Dec. 19, I was shopping with my 3-year-old son at Gabriel Brothers when a woman approached me. She said: "The Lord has led me to you today and He wanted me to give you this."
She then proceeded to hand me a $100 bill.
I told her that I could not accept it and she should give it to someone who really needed the money.
She insisted that it was for me and that she had no explanation as to why but that the Lord had led her to me this day and the money was a gift for me.
She handed me the money, wished me a Merry Christmas and went on her way.
I was so taken aback that I had no response. What this woman didn't know is that I had an explanation as to why the Lord had led her to me -- but I never got the chance to explain.
You see, my Nana passed away this past July. Christmas was not going to be the same this year. My entire family is a traditional close-knit Italian family and we are all having a difficult time without her.
So of course when I got home, I called my family members and told them what happened. They were all in disbelief how someone I've never met could give me $100. My husband asked me: What was I going to do with the money?
I pondered for awhile. Then I remembered my daughter telling us how her Sunday School class had fed 10 people with the canned goods they collected each week. That was my answer.
I wanted to let this "Christmas Messenger" know that my daughter and I bought groceries for the local food bank with most of the money. We purchased an outdoor snowman with the rest of the money as a reminder for future Christmases that true Christmas spirit does exist!
Happy New Year.... We are off to a good start for the Acts of Kindness Log and I hope that as the New Year progress,
we will see more people who will add their Kindness on this Blog.
There is no better feeling than knowing that one of your posts on this blog inspired someone else to help others.
~~~~~ Where they say, "I want to do something like that!"

PLUS... The great/harm feeling you get when you truly did an Act of Kindness that came from the heart.

~~~~~ What a wonderful, wonderful thing to do!!
I, Ms. Madi, spend time every week with my friend Leo ( whom I have known for over 20 years), who has had 2 major heart surgeries and has gone blind. Since last fall I have taken on being his supporter and advisor as he navigates a new life learning to 'see' the world as a blind person. First I have set him up with the Institue for the Blind so he could get valuable training. In December, I coordinated his move to a more updated and 'happening' assisted living community, closer to my family and other friends, so I could see him more often and be available for emergencies faster. Then this Thanksgiving was the first time he met my entire extended family. On New Years eve my family and I took him to a party (his first in 10 years) and we stayed out past 1- a first for Leo! Lastly, Leo spent the day at my home where he was treated to a bath ( no tub in his apartment), a massage from a licensed therapist, then dinner with us and finally I created some tactile tools so he could safely operate his microwave to reheat coffee/food independently. I am continually looking for ways to improve his life style by adapting or adding equipment/tools so he can be independent and regain some of his 'sighted' skills (such as cooking), using a phone, or reading (through audio options).
I live in an apartment and often times people will put their trash outside their doors while they are cleaning. My neighbors downstairs have been working extra hard and are having a difficult time. I was finally able to be their Trash Fairy and grab the bag and walk it down to the dumpster without them seeing. It totally made my day :) Now I am going to keep my eyes open for opportunities for the Trash Fairy to return and help other neighbors by taking their trash to the dumpster.
"I was in the drive-thru and had just ordered a Double Double Hamburger & a Chocolate Shake. When I got to the window they handed me my order and said it had been paid for already. I curiously asked, "Who paid for it?" And the girl said, "The guy ahead of you. It was Mr. Boggs from Goshin Karate & Judo Academy he does it all the time for people. And all he asks me to tell you is 'pay it forward.'"
This made my entire day! The next time I was in the same drive-thru, I paid for the person behind me. The best part was that I could spend the rest of the day imagining how good that person felt.
You never know how someone's day is going, and how a small act like paying for a person's lunch can turn their entire day around."
-- Thank you Mr. Boggs for your Act of Kindness
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

On Valentines Day 2009 Goshin Karate & Judo Academy set up a trip to take some of our Karate Kids that reside in North Phoenix/Scottsdale Arizona to the Dream Catchers Assisted living center.

We had 9 volunteer from Goshin Karate & Judo Academy; George Rautio, Payam Bipar, Amber Padilla, Chelsey Graham, Andrew Simpson, Aaron Guise, Jed Kaufman, Paul Deloughery & Brigid Deloughery

This amazing group of individuals performed a several Okinawa Katas, Nihanchi Shodan by Payam Bipar, Passai by Amber Padialla & Chelsey Graham, Pinan Shodan by Aaron Guise & George Rautio, and Pinan Nidan by Jed Kaufman. Everyone performed a series of drills that included jab, cross, round house kicks and jumping front kicks. Finish by tornado kicks and crescent kicks (inward, outward and spinning)

We finished our presentation with poetry from Jed Kaufman and Chelsey Graham and everyone one got to read their “I’ve Learned Statement”

Here are a couple of them;

I’ve learned…
That the best classroom is the world is at the feet of an elderly person.

I’ve learned…
That just one person saying to me, “You’ve made my days!” - Makes My Day!

I’ve learned…
That no matter how serious your life requires you to be, everyone needs a friend to act goofy with.

LAST ONE

I’ve learned…
That everyone you meet - deserves to be greeted with a smile.

We finished with leaving the residents two dozen red Roses, some Stuffed Animals and everyone received the now famous Goshin Karate Sticker – Free Hugs Available – First come - First Served

What a great way to give back to our community, by doing random acts of kindness.

Our students brought joy to the elderly residents with their visit. I hope that after they experienced the joy of visiting Dream Catchers that they will dedicate more time doing Acts of Kindness and volunteer more often.

During my visit, I received the best gift from one of the residents. He told me “You made my day.” Seeing that my time makes such a big difference in another person’s life makes me feel very special and fulfilled.

By volunteering, you learn things about life that you never knew. You also learn how friendly the people you serve can be and it motivates me to be even more thoughtful, caring and kind.

All of the Goshin Karate & Judo Academy students did a fabulous job. Two Claps – YOU ROCK!

Roger Boggs & Candice Boggs

Jonah Espinoza,

Saturday 2/28 - Jonah saw that another child had dropped his toy. (A Glow Stick) So he (Jonah) went and got it and gave it back to the boy. He did this all by himself and he told me (His mother) now that was an "Act of Kindness"

Everyday he says "Please and Thank You"

Wednesday - He dressed himself and picked up his toys without being told.
